Breast Implant Removal and Breast Implant Illness Diagnosis

Breast implant removal, also known as explant surgery, is performed to safely remove breast implants and, when necessary, surrounding capsule tissue. Patients may choose implant removal for aesthetic reasons, lifestyle changes, or health concerns related to breast implant illness (BII).

Breast implant illness refers to a range of symptoms that some individuals experience after receiving implants, including fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, chest discomfort, rashes, and autoimmune-like symptoms. While BII is not yet fully understood, growing awareness and patient experiences have highlighted the importance of careful evaluation and personalized care.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia with sedationor general anesthesia, depending on the complexity. Removal techniques are individualized and may include en bloc capsulectomy(removal of the implant and capsule together) when necessary for optimal safety and healing.

How Breast Implant Illness is Diagnosed:

  • Clinical Evaluation: A detailed consultation reviewing symptoms, medical history, and implant information.

  • Exclusion of Other Conditions: Tests may be ordered to rule out infections, autoimmune diseases, or other underlying issues.

  • Patient-Centered Assessment: Diagnosis is based on symptoms, as there is currently no specific laboratory test to confirm BII.

  • Response to Explantation: Many patients experience significant symptom improvement after implant removal.

Advantages of Implant Removal:

  • Relief from physical symptoms associated with breast implant illness

  • Elimination of risks related to implant rupture, leakage, or capsular contracture

  • Natural restoration of the chest contour

  • Possibility to combine with breast lift (mastopexy) if desired for optimal aesthetic outcome

Benefits:

  • Personalized surgical plan tailored to health and aesthetic goals

  • Enhanced overall wellbeing and peace of mind

  • Minimal scarring with careful surgical techniques

  • Supportive post-operative recovery to optimize healing
